The long-term consequences of moving from a word-based culture to a screen-based culture
I asked the question, “What happens to a civilization when people gradually lose the habit, and perhaps even the ability, to read deeply, write thoughtfully, and reason independently?”
Here is a reply from Chat GPT:
In medieval Europe, many people encountered biblical stories through stained glass, icons, sermons, and oral teaching. Printing, expanding literacy, and the Reformation helped more people engage with Scripture directly. Today, even as access to information expands, short videos, feeds, and AI summaries can increasingly mediate what we encounter.
The central concern is that we could become a society with unprecedented access to information but a declining capacity to evaluate it independently.
1. Less sustained, deep thinking
Reading demanding texts exercises attention, memory, and the ability to follow a complex argument. Constantly switching among short clips may leave less time to practice those habits. Studies have found associations between heavy short-form video use and weaker attention, but causation is not established.
Possible long-term consequence: A culture may know a little about many topics while struggling to explore any one topic deeply.
2. Greater vulnerability to manipulation
Text can be reread and examined for evidence. Video and imagery can convey truth powerfully, but they can also activate emotion quickly. Algorithmic feeds influence which arguments and images receive our attention.
Possible long-term consequence: Influence may increasingly belong to those who control attention rather than those who offer the strongest reasoning.
3. Difficulty articulating beliefs
Writing forces us to organize ideas, test our assumptions, and explain our reasoning. Watching a video about courage is not the same intellectual exercise as writing an explanation of courage and defending it.
Possible long-term consequence: People may have strong opinions but less practice explaining, evaluating, or revising them.
4. Dependence on interpreters of truth
Historically, wider literacy helped more Christians read Scripture directly. Today, a person might encounter Bible verses mostly through clips, influencers, or AI explanations rather than reading passages in context.
Possible long-term consequence: Christians may rely more on intermediaries and less on their own careful examination of Scripture. Acts 17:11 offers the example of the Bereans examining the Scriptures.
5. Weaker habits of civic deliberation
Self-government benefits from citizens who can weigh evidence, follow complex arguments, and consider trade-offs. Short slogans and emotional clips can make complicated public questions appear deceptively simple.
Possible long-term consequence: Public discussion may become easier to polarize and harder to sustain thoughtfully.
6. A new divide in intellectual independence
One group may continue reading demanding texts, writing carefully, and checking original sources while using AI as a tool. Another may increasingly depend on feeds and generated summaries without testing the underlying claims. These are possibilities, not fixed categories.
Possible long-term consequence: The divide could affect educational opportunity, leadership, and the ability to exercise independent judgment.
Warning signs, with important cautions
U.S. adult literacy and student reading assessments have raised concerns, and fewer young teenagers report reading for fun daily than in previous years. These trends do not establish that screens caused the changes. Research on paper versus digital reading is mixed and depends on how reading is done. The deeper question is whether sustained reading, writing, reflection, and conversation are being displaced by passive consumption.
What this means for Christian Crossroads Academy
Classical Christian education can intentionally cultivate habits that may become less common: listening attentively, reading meaningful texts, memorizing, handwriting, retelling stories, discussing ideas, and explaining reasoning. Latin, grammar, logic, rhetoric, and careful engagement with Scripture can support these habits. In K–3, the foundation begins with reading aloud, rich vocabulary, storytelling, handwriting, and thoughtful questions.
A connection to Character Mandate
AI can make information extraordinarily accessible while allowing people to bypass some of the work of developing understanding. The challenge is not merely whether technology can produce answers, but whether we retain the habits needed to judge them wisely.
We may be entering an age when information is more accessible than ever, while independent thinking becomes increasingly difficult to sustain.
If we raise a generation that can access every answer but struggles to read deeply, think independently, and articulate what it believes, who or what will shape its convictions?
